Initial Counseling Session

What is the initial counseling session?
This free credit counseling session is a comprehensive look at your current financial situation. It sets the foundation for identifying solutions to credit and debt concerns.

What happens in this session?
You will meet with a certified credit counselor in a confidential setting either in person or on the phone for approximately 60 – 90 minutes. During that time you and the counselor will:

  • review your current financial situation
    • income/expenses
    • debts
    • budget
  • discuss the reasons for your financial issues
  • develop a list of options available
  • create an action plan to get you headed in the right direction
You and your counselor will discuss what steps you can take to resolve financial concerns. Based on your income, your total list of expenses and debts, these may include referrals to community resources, changes to your lifestyle, and ways to increase income or decrease expenses. We’re not here to judge you – just to help you find solutions!

One of the options may be enrollment in the Debt Management Program (DMP). The counselor will provide information and details on the DMP and whether or not it is a viable option for you.

What do you need to bring with you?
  • List of current expenses
  • Statements no older than 60 days from credit cards and other bills
  • Pay stub or other income information
